A Brief Overview of Washington County

Washington County was initially created in 1836 and named after President George Washington in 1845 after its reorganization. It is located in the northern part of Wisconsin between Madison and Milwaukee cities. Currently, the county has a population of 137,800 per the 2020 census results, indicating a 4.4% growth since 2010.
In 1852, there were attempts to partition the county into two to incorporate another county as the southern half. However, voters rejected these attempts by the legislature, but in 1853, the splitting efforts were successful, creating eastern and western portions, with the former being Ozaukee County. The latter part remained as Washington County, with its county seat in West Bend.

Washington County Sheriff's Office

The Washington County Sheriff's Office is located at 500 Rolfs Ave, West Bend, WI 53095, United States. Its primary objective is to ensure the community is safe by building trust, reducing crime rates, and enhancing life quality while safeguarding constitutional rights.
The current Sheriff is Martin R. Schulteis, who has been in charge of the county since November 2018. Usually, electorates in Washington County get a chance to elect their Sheriff every four years and can reelect a current one if they so desire.
Below are some of the responsibilities of the office which are conducted by the staff members, including the Deputies:

The Sheriff's Office Use of Force Policy

Daily, deputies are engaged in a wide variety of encounters, and they have the authority to use reasonable force in the performance of their responsibilities when the situation calls for it. Usually, these officers are under intensive training to get a solid comprehension of and genuine respect for the boundaries of their power. This is particularly the case when overcoming a hostile person or crowd.
The local laws require officers to evaluate the appropriateness of the use of force based on reasonableness. Such an assessment has to consider the fact that officers may have to decide rapidly depending on the situation. They make these decisions amid uncertain circumstances and constantly tense situations.

DNA Collection

The Sheriff's Office is responsible for conducting all DNA tests related to ongoing court cases. Usually, you'll receive DNA testing letters directly from the Wisconsin Department of Justice, and, in such a case, you must submit a sample through the Sheriff's office. Call 262-335-4428 to book an appointment, where the services are available throughout the week from 9 am to 5 pm.

Community Programs

The Sheriff's office provides several programs for the benefit of the community. Deputy Sheriff with specialized training is in charge of each program to ensure they achieve the intended goal. The programs include:

Crime Prevention

The Sheriff's office aims to collaborate with you to find solutions to criminal activities in the neighborhood. To do so, the office has a Neighborhood Watch program which strengthens the bond between law enforcement officers and the citizens. In the program, citizens form Neighborhood Watch groups to keep an eye out for any suspicious or illegal behavior in their area. If any, they promptly report them to the authorities.
The Sheriff's office plays a crucial role in the organization of such groups. If you're interested in joining one or want to learn more about the groups, follow the National Sheriff's Association website.

Internship Programs

The Sheriff's Office collaborates with local technical institutions to provide an internship program for students pursuing courses relating to law enforcement. Successful students accompany the Deputies on-field engagements for hands-on experience to effectively apply what they've learned in the classroom. Additionally, the students have access to various departments to learn how they operate in the provision of services for the community.
Note that all requests to participate in the program must happen through the student's college. Additionally, an application isn't an assurance that the Sheriff will select you since the office receives multiple applications.

Washington County Adult & Juvenile Detention

Washington County Sheriff's Office offers detention services for adults and juveniles through the County Jail and Juvenile Detention Center, respectively.

The Adult County Jail

The primary purpose of the County Jail is to provide a secure environment for the correction of inmates by implementing adequate procedures to assure security, control, and order.

Inmate Search

The Sheriff's Office collaborates with the VINE to offer an online website where county residents can learn about inmates in the county jail. However, the website is generic in that it provides a list of all inmates in Wisconsin. Hence, for accurate results, it's imperative you have the inmate's full name or incarceration number. The search category will also prompt you to confirm whether you want the search results to display offender photos.
After a successful search, the results will indicate the following inmate details:

However, the information on the website isn't entirely reliable as custody status changes regularly. As such, ensure you confirm with the facility if you feel the provided information is misleading.
VINE also provides a protective order service that allows residents to keep an eye on protective orders from their laptops or over the phone.

Sending Money to Inmates

Washington County Jail collaborates with Jail ATM to allow you to deposit funds for inmates in the correctional facility easily. Inmates need money to purchase items from the commissary, including snacks, soaps, and other hygiene items.
For a successful deposit, you have to open an account with the company. Additionally, it's imperative that you have the recipient's name and incarceration number. Alternatively, you can visit the facility in person at 500 Rolfs Avenue, West Bend, WI 53090, and deposit at the lobby's kiosk.

Huber (Work Release)

Sometimes, the County Court System grants some convicts Huber Law privileges. This is where an inmate can leave the facility during incarceration to work or seek employment in preparation for reintegration into the community. Inmates participating in the program come from state or federal correctional facilities, and their remaining sentences are usually six months or less.
The County Laws require the Sheriff to distribute such inmates' incomes in the following manner:

For any infraction of jail rules or a breach of prisoner discipline, the Sheriff has the authority to deny the inmate's request to leave the jail. Additionally, the Sheriff's Office has the right to utilize a GPS tool for electronic monitoring of the inmate's whereabouts.

Juvenile Detention

The county's Juvenile Detention Facility is under the management of the Sheriff's office and offers detention services for entire Wisconsin. Detainees in the facility engage in various activities, including participating in educational programs through the West Bend School District.

Access to Medical Care

The facility has a medical team that monitors the health status of all juveniles. As a guardian, you'll have to fill out a medical consent form upon admitting a minor into the facility and present any medication the child is presently taking, if any.

Inmate Personal Needs

The detention center has a strict policy against incoming items from family members. This is because it provides the juveniles with everything they might need during their stay in the facility, including hygiene materials. However, medical prescriptions and learning materials are excluded from the prohibition.

Phone Call Services

All calls from the facility are collect calls and take place between 8 am and 10 pm. To deposit money into an inmate's phone account, contact customer service at 888-506-8407.
