Dane County, WI, is a central county in Madison, Wisconsin’s Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county was founded in 1839 and named after Nathan Dane, a Massachusetts delegate famous for helping Wisconsin attains independence from the Northwest Territory. Today, Dane County, WI, is the second most populous county in Wisconsin, having a population of 561,504 as of the 2020 nationwide census.  

The county government of Dane County has Madison as its county seat and its headquarters at the City-County Building, Room 426, 210 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Madison, WI 53703. The Sheriff’s Department has at least 450 sworn staff and another 120 support staff that work under the Sheriff and Deputy Sheriff’s direction in providing the following community-based law enforcement services for the residents, visitors, and businesses in Dane County: –

1. Use the Dane County Jail Roster  

Dane County Sheriff’s Office maintains an elaborate jail roster on its official website on behalf of Dane County Jail. Through it, the public can confirm the whereabouts of their family and friends that they suspect are inmates at the Dane County Jail. To scrutinize the jail roster: –  

  • Go to the statewide inmate search locator at https://appsdoc.wi.gov/lop/home.do  
  • Select Dane County Jail to narrow your search to the county inmate search  
  • Use the inmate’s full names and DOC numbers to generate offender information from the jail roster  
  • Click search  

2. Inquire In-Person at the Jail Administration  

Note that the Dane County Jail Roster is updated on weekdays during business hours. In turn, any new incarcerations or releases during the weekends or holidays will not be updated until the first work day of the following week. In turn, if you cannot locate your loved one on the jail roster, have no access to the internet, or reside near the Dane County Jail, you can conduct a county inmate search in person. That is, book an appointment with the jail administrator by calling (608) 284-6100 to visit the county jail and inquire about the whereabouts of your loved ones.   

3. Use the VINELink Service  

Finally, the state of Wisconsin participates in the nationwide victim notification service. In turn, a victim of crime in Wisconsin can confirm the whereabouts of their perpetrator, who is currently serving time in a Wisconsin correctional facility. Then, if you are a victim of a crime and you suspect that the perpetrator is being held at the Dane County Jail, go to www.vinelink.com to confirm. Here, select Wisconsin as the state of interest. Then, proceed to the Search and Register tab on the navigation pane to select Dane County jail as the correctional facility of interest. Click search to generate the offender’s information.  

Once you confirm that the perpetrator is incarcerated at Dane County Jail, follow the instructions provided to register for phone and email notifications of their movements within and outside correctional facilities in Wisconsin.
