About the County

Jefferson is a County in Wisconsin State and also exists in the Micropolitan Statistical Area. It launched officially in 1839, and the Yankee settlers were responsible for its founding. These settlers were from New England.

The inspiration for this county’s name originated from Jefferson County, New York. It’s where some of the county’s original settlers came from before settling in Wisconsin. Recent census reports have shown that the county covers up to 585 square miles.

A total of 30 board-of-commissioners are responsible for running the county. They serve as its legislative body and work alongside seven other elected commissioners. The commissioners on this board serve for two years terms. The head of this department is the County Board, responsible for hiring his subordinates. Some of the main cities in the county include:

  • Fort Atkinson
  • Jefferson (county seat)
  • Watertown (partly in Dodge County)
  • Whitewater (largely exists in Walworth County)
  • Lake Mills
  • Waterloo

 Jefferson Sherriff’s Department

The Jefferson Sherriff Department is responsible for policing the county, its residents, and their property. The department’s mission is to encourage a justice system that focuses on various aspects of life.

These include protecting property and ensuring every respects the law. Its role also involves performing its duty based on the Constitution of the USA and the Ordinances of Jefferson County. Some of the other details of this department include:

  • Sheriff’s Office, 411 S. Center Avenue, Jefferson, WI 53549
  • Phone: 920-674-7310
  • Emergency: 911
  • Anonymous Tip Line: 800-78-Crime
  • Fax: 920-674-7126

Divisions

Here are some of the main divisions responsible for the running of Jefferson County:

Communications Center

The communications center runs under the oversight of over ten dispatchers. The center features 911-enhanced communications systems, which help address the callers’ details. The center also provides national weather insights for the Jefferson and Dodge Counties.

Detectives

The detective’s division features one captain and seven other subordinates. Their roles include performing investigations on criminal activities. This role involves interviewing witnesses, developing search warrants, and following up on crime scenes. One of the professionals in this department handles the needs of juveniles.

Patrol

The role of this department involves performing scheduled patrol procedures in all regions of the country. It’s a team with various departments, including SWAT and the K9 unit. Each of them cooperates with the communications centre that relays regular information about criminal or safety issues.

Jail

The jail department handles all functions relating to inmates’ processing, transportation, and detention. The officer that performs this function comes from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s department. The jail’s budget comes from the County Clerk and the Federal department. Inmates serving sentences in jail are those that have short-term incarcerations. However, the jail occasionally houses inmates who have long-term prison sentences.

 Jefferson County Inmate Search

While performing a Jefferson County inmate search is possible, it’s good to realize a few things. First, it takes a few hours for the Jefferson County Sherriff’s department to process the information. The information is also a public record, meaning anyone can find the inmate data. However, the information is also under the jurisdiction of the Federal government.

Once an inmate is arrested, they are taken to the Jefferson County jail for processing. The jail will process the inmate and upload their information online. The jail will upload other records once the inmate receives their incarceration.

Remember that the jail only houses inmates that have short prison terms. The inmate details are also permanent records stored in different systems after release. The classifications of inmate records during this point relate to the crimes they have committed in the past. Jefferson county has four main records: inmate, arrest, warrant, and sex offender.

Accessing Inmate Data

Here is a step-by-step guide on the process of accessing the inmate roster at Jefferson County Jail:

  • You need to have all the relevant details of the inmate with you ahead of time. Some examples include their names, address, and age. It can also help if you have information on their crimes.
  • Jefferson County uses the Vine Link system to provide inmate information. It’s a free and anonymous service that offers inmate information. The information the system can provide can be different inmate details. Some of the common ones include mugshots, age, and incarceration details.
  • You can also make a physical visit to the prison. However, ensure you get to the facility during normal working hours. Doing this helps increase your chances of finding helpful information.
  • You can also contact the department for more information on the inmate. Again, remember the importance of contacting the prison at the right times.
