Marathon County is located at the crossroads of Highways 29 and 51/139 in North Central Wisconsin. The County was founded in 1850, created from a part of Portage County, and named after the battlefield at Marathon, Greece. The adjacent counties to Marathon county include Lincoln county, Langlade county, Shawano county, Waupaca county, Portage county, Wood county, Clark county, and Taylor county.  

Geographically, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, Marathon County is the largest County in the state of Wisconsin, with an area of 1,576 square miles (4,080km), with land occupying 1,545 square miles (4,000km), and water occupying 31 square miles (80km). On the other hand, the population has rapidly grown since 2000, from 126,031 -134,063 in 2010, according to data from the 2020 census.  

Marathon County provides excellent variety to those who live, work or even visit. In addition, the County offers an abundance of recreational and cultural opportunities. For instance, the Grand Theater (Wausau) and Lucille Tack Center (Spencer) bring high-quality theatrical and musical events.  

Marathon County Sheriff’s Office  

Marathon County Sheriff’s office comprises more than 200 employees working in various divisions, including administration, communications, corrections, investigations, and patrol. The office is determined to provide a safe, secure, and crime-free community through trust building, enforcement, and public safety management.   

Administrative Division  

The Administrative Division is the center of the sheriff and chief deputy. The division offers coordination and direction and controls all activities to accomplish the office’s mission and vision. In addition, the division performs various duties such as;  

  • Policy development  
  • Research and long-range planning  
  • Budget administration for the department  
  • Management of grant-funded programs  
  • Offering training within the department  

Investigations Division  

The Investigations division comprises sworn law enforcement officers whose primary duty is to serve and protect. The division is in charge of conducting criminal investigations within the jurisdictions of the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department. Other responsibilities in this department include executing warrants, arresting offenders, processing and documenting crime scenes, and assisting other law enforcement agencies within Marathon County that may require some help investigating significant crimes. Within the Investigation division are various units, including General Investigations, Special Investigation Unit, Juvenile/Sensitive Crime Unit, Evidence Technician, Warrant/Identification Unit, and the Civil Process Unit.  

Patrol Division  

The patrol division is in charge of protecting life and property, including enforcing federal, state, and county laws and ordinances. The primary duties of the patrol division include prevention and intervention of adult and juvenile crime, offering assistance to citizens in need of service, apprehension of law violators, and traffic coordination. In addition, the patrol responds to calls for service dispatched and prepares reports on action taken or other documentation needed for prosecution purposes.  

Correction Division  

The correction division is responsible for both Adult Detention and Juvenile Detention. The division secures inmates apprehended by other law enforcement agencies throughout Wisconsin. In addition, the correction division provides inmates with different programs which help incarcerated inmates with various skills to support them after their sentence. For instance, the Adult Detention offers the Huber Program, which allows sentenced inmates to leave the facility for work release, education, and community service.   

E911 Dispatch/ Communications  

The communication division receives and processes all E-911 Emergency calls for Marathon County. In addition, the division gets and processes numerous routine service calls and administrative calls, monitors courthouse security systems, issues severe weather warnings, and sounds the tornado sirens. Other duties by the division include dispatch response teams (S.W.A.T. Team, Dive Team, and Crisis team) and serving on special teams as crisis negotiators, C.P.R. and First Aid Instructors, training officers, and performing public service presentations.

In addition, the Marathon County jail provides a free mobile app (Google Play and Apple App Store) that allows the public to view details regarding current inmates in the facility. In addition, you can perform an inmate search via VINElink. Vine link, is mainly used by victims of crime whereby they use the telephone or internet to search for information concerning their offender’s custody status and register to receive telephone and email notifications when their offender’s custody status changes. For a successful inmate search, you must provide inmate information such as full name, age, gender, date of birth, and I.D.
