Menominee County is situated about 45 miles northwest of Green Bay in the U.S State of Wisconsin. The county is included in the Shawano, WI, metropolitan statistical area, which is included in the Green Bay-Shawano, WI, combined statistical area. Ideally, this is Wisconsin’s latest county, having been created in 1959 after recognition of the Menominee tribe was terminated by federal law, although later, in 1974, the tribe regained federal recognition and restoration of most of its reservation. Keshena is the county seat, while its adjacent counties include Oconto County, Shawano County, and Langlade County.  

According to the 2020 United States census, the total population of people is 4,255, 1400 with about 1,064 families residing in the county. The population density is 11.9 inhabitants per square mile (4.6km), while there are 2,145 housing units at an average density of 6.0 per square mile (2.3km). In addition, the racial makeup of the county is 85.6% Native American, 11.8% White, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.1% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races.  

Geographically, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 365 square miles (950 km), where land occupies 358 square miles (930km) while water occupies 7.4 square miles (19km) (2.0%).  

Menominee County Sheriff’s Office  

The Menominee County sheriff’s office is situated in Keshena, Wisconsin, headed by Rebecca Smith. The office is a law enforcement agency that promotes public safety in Menominee County through public policing and managing county jails and inmates. In addition, the office is in charge of patrolling any incorporated areas of the county or areas not covered by the municipal police force and enforcing legal judgments, including tax delinquencies, foreclosures, and repossessions.  

There are two sheriff departments in Menominee County, Wisconsin, serving a population of 4506 people in an area of 358 square miles. Moreover, there is one sheriff’s department per 2253 people and one sheriff’s department per 178 square miles. Menominee County is classified as the first of 72 countries in sheriff departments per capita and 4th of 72 counties in sheriff departments per square mile.  

Within the department, some sub-departments work hand in hand with the sheriff’s office. They include: 

  • K-9 Unit is an available resource for missing persons, drug searches, demonstrations at local schools and community events, as well as helping other area law enforcement agencies.  
  • 911 cell phone banks, the Menominee sheriff’s office has joined with the 911 cell phone bank to protect citizens and domestic violence victims through cell phone collections. The office provides free emergency cell phones to those in need.  
  • In the civil process, the Menominee county sheriff’s office serves and implements services according to law, processes, writs, and orders delivered to the department for execution.  
  • A community service program, the Menominee County sheriff’s office offers a community work van crew. The program aims to divert individuals from serving jail sentences and reduces jail sentences by utilizing inmates to do community service throughout Menominee County. The crew usually works for non-profit organizations, and by performing community service, eligible inmates earn credit days off their jail sentence or work off fines.  
  • Medical Services, the office ensures that medical services are offered to inmates as needed by the jail nurse. All inmates incarcerated for fourteen days must receive a physical examination. However, these services are chargeable, and the money is redeemed from the inmate’s accounts.  
  • The Marine division, the Menominee county marine patrol, is in charge of patrolling all bodies of water open to the public, enforcing state boating laws, investigating marine-related complaints, conducting boat safety inspections of recreational boats, conducting livery safety inspections, and assisting U.S coast guard with law enforcement operation and in conducting searches of commercial vessels visiting the port of Menominee.

Information you can obtain from the inmate locator includes charges, booking, mug shots, inmate list, release date, arrests, warrant, crime committed, release date, facility of incarceration, bond, and INS. For a successful inmate search, you must provide some of the inmate’s information, such as full name, date of birth, and IDN. Apart from locating an inmate online, you can visit the facility an inmate is currently incarcerated or contact the facility directly by calling 715-799-3353 to gather more information. On the other hand, the Menominee County jail provides a free mobile app (Google Play and Apple App Store), whereby the public can receive information concerning currently incarcerated inmates in the county.  

Alternatively, you can search for an inmate via the WI VINE County Jails. The VINE link is a service provided by the office of victim services and programs (OVSP) in partnership with local law enforcement agencies. In addition, the WI VINE county jail is anonymous, offering information and notification concerning inmates in county jails to victims, law enforcement, and the community. The victims and the citizens can enroll through the WI VINE county jails website or phone line to get automated phone or email notifications about changes in an inmate’s custody status. Moreover, users can call or visit online to check an offender’s status without registering for notifications. If you register for phone notification, you must choose a four-digit PIN and will need to enter the four digits PIN to stop automated phone calls.
