Monroe County is located in the U.S State of Wisconsin. The County was founded in 1854 and named after James Monroe, an American statesman, lawyer, diplomat, and founding father who served as the fifth president of the United States from 1817 to 1825. The seat of county is Sparta, while the adjacent counties include Jackson County, Juneau County, Vernon County, and La Crosse County.  

According to the census of 2020, the total population is 46,274, while the population density is 51.4 inhabitants per square mile (19.8km). In addition, there are about 19769 housing units at an average density of 21.9 per square mile (8.5km). The racial makeup of Monroe County is 89.2% white, 1.4% African American, 1.3% Native American, 0.8% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.1% from other races, and 5.0% from two or more races. The population of Hispanics or Latino of any race is 5.5%.  

According to the data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Monroe County has a total area of 908 square miles (2350 km), where 901 square miles (2330km) are land, and 7.4 square miles (19km) (0.8%) are water.  

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office  

Wesley D.Revels is the current head of the Monroe County Sheriff’s office. The office’s mission is to promote, preserve and deliver a feeling of safety, accountability, and service to the County of Monroe. In addition, the office is a law enforcement agency that supports public safety in Monroe County through public policing and managing county jails and inmates. Moreover, the office is in charge of patrolling any unincorporated areas of the County or areas not covered by the municipal police force, as well as enforcing legal judgments such as tax delinquencies, foreclosures, and repossessions.  

The sheriff’s office divisions include:  

Tax Warrant Division  

The Monroe County Sheriff’s office is in charge of assisting in the collection of monies owed to the Indiana Department of tax warrants. You should note that a tax warrant is not an arrest warrant but a chance to make voluntary restitution for taxes owed. The tax warrants are usually issued b written letter and never via telephone. If, for instance, you are disputing the amount owed, call the revenue department. Therefore, you should never reach the Monroe County sheriff’s office concerning a dispute over the amount owed, as this agency has nothing to do with setting the amount of taxes owed to the state.  

Investigation Division  

The criminal investigations division of the Monroe County Sheriff’s office has investigators whose assigned cases include crimes against persons, property, auto, financial, and identity theft. In addition, the unit is responsible for evidence collection and crime scene investigations, narcotic investigations, and other crimes involving gambling, prostitution, and alcohol.  

Administration  

The administrative staff performs many daily duties for the Monroe County sheriff’s office, including hiring, recruitment, human resources, accreditation, public information, and finance.  

K-9 Division  

The K-9 team is trained and competent for narcotic or explosive detention and patrol applications throughout Wisconsin. Each group with the K-9 Unit completes the annual certification mandated by the state of Wisconsin. In addition, the team is trained in human tracking, article and building searches, criminal apprehension, and handler care. The unit works with the patrol deputies daily while offering assistance with the needs and requests of other special teams within the agency.  

Field Operation Division  

The division is in charge of providing law enforcement services to the residents of Monroe County. The primary duty is enforcing state and county laws and protecting life and property. Other responsibilities include arrests, traffic enforcement, executing warrants, and performing the preliminary criminal investigation.  

Victim Services  

Monroe County sheriff’s office victim services unit combines a child advocacy center and a victim/ witness program. The sheriff’s office acknowledges the importance of adequate help to innocent victims in the County. Hence, the Victim Services location is a temporary, non-threatening, friendly environment so all victims can feel safe.  

Monroe County Inmate Search  

The Monroe County jail offers an online inmate search for interested persons who would like to locate an inmate. To search an inmate, you must provide their full name and ID number. The inmate roster is usually updated daily, and information is accessed 24/7. After visiting the inmate’s locator, you will obtain information such as inmate list, bookings, mug shots, case records, charges, arrests, release date, bond, aliases, facility, degree level, and criminal records. Alternatively, you can contact the facility directly to find out if an inmate is held by calling 608-269-2117 or visiting the facility in person. The Monroe County jail provides a free mobile app (Google Play and Apple App Store), allowing citizens to obtain information about incarcerated inmates. The app provides essential safety information, news, and critical alerts for places you visit.  

In addition, the Wisconsin Department of Corrections provides WI VINE, a service provided by the office of Victim Services and Programs (OVSP) in partnership with the local law enforcement groups. The WI VINE county jails are anonymous, offering information and notification concerning inmates in county jails to victims, law enforcement, and the public. Victims and interested individuals can enroll through the WI VINE county jails or phone line to get automated phone calls or email notifications regarding changes in an offender’s custody status. Users can call or visit online to check an offender’s status without registering for information. If you register for phone notification, you must choose four digits PIN and will need to enter the PIN to stop automated phone calls.
