Oneida County is a County in the state of Wisconsin, United States. The county was founded in 1887 and named after the Oneida people. The county seat of Oneida County is Rhinelander, while the adjacent counties include Forest County, Langlade County, Lincoln County, Price County, and Vilas County.   

According to the census of 2020, the population is 37845, while the population density is 34.0 inhabitants per square mile (13.1km). On the other hand, there are 30465 housing units at an average density of 27.3 per square mile (10.5km). In addition, the racial makeup of Oneida County is 93.7% White, 1.2% Native American, 0.6% African American, 0.5% Asian, 0.6% from other races, and 3.3% from more races. Ethnically, the total population is 1.5% Hispanic or Latino of any race.  

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Oneida County’s total area is 1236 square miles (3200km), whereby the land occupies 1113 square miles (2880km), and water takes 123 square miles (329km) (10%). The county is a center of attraction for tourists, and most tourists flock to Minocqua, a town of nearly 5000 people with a summer population of around 15000.  

Oneida County Sheriff’s Office  

Sheriff Grady Hartman currently heads the office of the sheriff. The sheriff is a constitutional and chief law enforcement officer in the county and is in charge of keeping the peace within Oneida County. Some of the duties of the sheriff’s office include law enforcement patrol, jail operations, serving civil process, court security, transportation of inmates, recreational safety patrol, special response team, crime prevention, and public education. Other duties include Hazmat Unit, Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE), and enforcement and criminal investigation. The office’s primary goal is to solicit input from the citizens and provide them with knowledge through the various programs and services provided by the sheriff’s office. Moreover, the office has a great culture of looking for ways to become better and continuous improvement is the pillar that guides the office.  

The office of the sheriff’s divisions in Oneida County includes:  

Support Services  

The support service division is in charge of maintaining the records such as accident reports, incident reports, officer reports, photographs, recordings, E911 records, and jail records. In addition, the division performs different forms and background checks for public and private entities and statistical data entry of crime report information. The technicians in the division are responsible for inmate account management, miscellaneous grants, civil process, payroll, and general administration of the sheriff’s office.  

Administration Division  

The administrative division of Oneida County is responsible for the overall administration of the sheriff’s office functions such as policy development, research and long-range planning, community relations and crime prevention, budget administration and financial audit compliance, and management of grant programs and related funds. Other duties include assignment and operation of the motor vehicle fleet program, research, and long-range planning and allocation of personnel to assist the Law enforcement and judiciary committee of the Oneida County board of supervisors.  

Investigative Division  

The division performs county-wide criminal and juvenile investigations. In addition, the division is responsible for investigating all significant felonies or specific crimes which require extensive follow-up investigations. The investigative captain supervises the division comprises five full-time detective sergeants. Moreover, the division has special duties involving the Drug enforcement unit and the police-school liaison unit.  

Emergency Services/ E911  

The Oneida County sheriff’s office maintains two full-time lead telecommunications centers. The division offers dispatch services for one full-time fire department, sixteen volunteer fire departments, ambulances services, nine first responder teams, one city police department, and one township police department.  

Patrol Division  

The patrol division is committed to providing quality services to the residents of Oneida County. In addition, the division is responsible for all initial investigations, crash investigations, and handling most calls for service. The patrol deputies handle traffic enforcement duties and various specialized functions such as Dare, Crime, prevention, recreational patrol, police school liaison, and HAZMAT duties.

In addition, the Oneida County jail provides a free mobile app (Google Play and Apple App Store) where you can receive details concerning any inmate incarcerated. The mobile app lets you connect to important safety information, news, and critical alerts within your surroundings. The app providers work together with public safety and law enforcement agencies nationwide so you can receive and access important information in time to keep your loved one safe.  

If you cannot search an inmate, you can visit the VINE, a service provided by the office of Victim Services and Programs (OVSP), which works with local enforcement agencies. The WI VINE county jails are anonymous, giving you information and notification concerning inmates incarcerated to victims, law enforcement, and the public. You can enroll through the WI VINE county jail website or phone line to get automated phone, texts, or email notifications about the offender’s custody status changes. Once you register for phone notification, you must choose a four-digit PIN and enter the four-digit PIN to stop automated phone calls. The calls continue for 48 hours or until the correct PIN is entered.
