Rusk County is a county in the United States state of Wisconsin. The population in this area was 14188 as of the 2020 census. It has Ladysmith as its seat. The CountyCounty was created in 1901 and was originally called Gates County after the Milwaukee land speculator James L. Gates. It was later renamed Rusk County after Jeremiah M. Rusk, the first U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and the governor of Wisconsin in 1905. Rusk County was created from the northern part of Chippewa County. It is particularly situated in the northwestern part of Wisconsin.   

Rusk County comprises a total area of 931 square miles, including 914 square miles of land and 17 square miles of water. Four rivers run through this area, including Jump, Thornapple, Flambeau, and Chippewa Rivers. Visitors and residents can enjoy various outdoor activities such as canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. Rusk County Sheriff’s Office strives to provide courteous, timely, and professional service to all residents, businesses, and agencies that request assistance from any member of this Office. Its function is to provide criminal investigation, professional law enforcement, civil process, dispatch and corrections services, and search and rescue services to citizens who need or request assistance. Rusk County comprises 24 townships, eight villages, and one city. Rusk County Jail is a medium security level correctional facility located at 311 Miner Avenue East, Ladysmith, WI 54848. This facility houses adult offenders from all of Rusk County. Most offenders here await trial, while some serve sentences, usually less than a year. The jail initially opened in 1984, but its present setup opened in 2002. This regional correctional facility currently houses about 669 offenders and boasts about 4534 inmate bookings yearly. It has straight cellblocks and heading-management-type units.
