About the County

Sauk County is located in the south-central part of Wisconsin and has its name derived from the Sauk people, who were the County’s principal inhabitants in the 1840s. Currently, the County has a population of 65,763 per the 2020 census data and has its seat in Baraboo, the County’s largest city. The census results also indicate that the County is majorly made of Whites, comprising 95.1% of the population. Other racial-ethnic groups present include Native Americans, African Americans, and Asians.

Sauk County is extensive, covering 849 square miles, 831 of them being the land area, and the rest is water. The County also has major tourist attractions, including Dr. Evermor’s Art Park, Baster’s Hollow, and the Mid-Continent Railway Museum.

In terms of political alignment, Sauk County has been Democratic since 1992. However, prior to this period, the residents voted in Republican leaders in all but five elections.

About the County Sheriff’s Office

The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office is located at 1300 Lange Court, Baraboo, WI 53913. It primarily aims to protect the county residents by using the County’s budget to deliver effective and timely law enforcement services. The Sheriff achieves this objective with the help of several Divisions and Units, including the Patrol Division and the K-9 Unit. The following public services are available to the public via the Sheriff’s Department:

Civil Processes

Civil processes are available through the Civil Process Office, which enforces court orders and maintains all county legal documents. Additionally, the Office performs court-ordered evictions for non-compliant individuals.

What to Do if the Civil Process Office Attempts to Serve You Papers

You may have applied for some papers via the Civil Process Office and were told to wait for a particular duration. You are responsible for following up on the application and making arrangements for paper collection. To do so, contact the Office at 608-355-3478 from Monday through Friday between 8 am and 4 pm. Alternatively, you may pick up the documents at the Sheriff’s Office. This option comes with the condition that only document owners can pick them; you cannot send third parties to collect on your behalf.

DMV Services

DMV services available through the Sheriff’s Office include vehicle registration and license renewal. For vehicle registration, visit the Sauk County Law Enforcement Center at the Sheriff’s Office and provide a new owner-signed title. If the title is unavailable, present a signed MV1 form which you can access here. Note that the processing fee is $19.50, and you’ll receive the new title within two weeks via mail.

License Plate Renewal

The Sheriff’s Office offers license renewal services for cars, trucks, and motorbikes at a $10 fee, regardless of the vehicle type. Afterward, you’ll receive the stickers as the authorities update the DOT website.

The Office is open for the above services from Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm. Additionally, all forms of payments are acceptable, including cash and credit cards. However, you’ll incur an additional 2% charge if you opt for the latter payment option.

Other services offered by the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office include fingerprinting, jail management, and traffic accident listing.

County Inmate Search

The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office opened the Sauk County Jail in May 2003, a facility that covers 145,000 square feet. The 463-bed jail houses male and female inmates, primarily those serving medium-term sentences. In addition, the Wisconsin Department of Corrections may contact the jail to hold inmates awaiting community reentry from state-run facilities.

What is the Inmate Search Process?

The County inmate search process can be a bit complex, especially where there is more than one jail. However, the Freedom of Information Act requires all correctional facilities to devise easy record-access means for the general public. The Sauk County Jail complies with this directive by providing an offender search website that comprises information on all offenders in Wisconsin, primarily County and State inmates.

How Does the Website Work?

The abovementioned offender search website provides the following inmate search options:

  • Search by Name
  • Address Search
  • DOC Number Search

If you want to learn about inmates specifically in Sauk County, use the first two options in conjunction. The Search by Name category allows you to provide an inmate’s first and last name. Under the Search by Address option, specify the County of interest; in this case, it’s Sauk County.

The Search Results

A successful search will give the following inmate details:

  • Facility of Incarceration
  • Charges and Offenses Committed
  • Incarceration Date and Duration
  • Parole Eligibility
  • Mugshots
  • Age and Race

In addition, information on sex offenders is available through the Wisconsin DOC Sex Offender Registry. This database allows you to learn about registered sex offenders across the state and their registration compliance status. The search categories available via the site are:

  • Name Search
  • Geographical Search

The geographical search option allows you to narrow the search results to a certain radius, after which it lists the names of all registrants within the particular radius.

Inmate Search Using the Jail Roster

If the above options are unsuccessful, you can opt to visit the Wisconsin Sheriff’s Office and review the provided jail roster. This is a booklet containing information on arrestees, charges, and incarceration status. This roster is also available at the County Law Enforcement Center. All you have to do is visit the jail or call (608) 355-3210 for assistance.
