About the County

Sawyer County is located in northwestern Wisconsin, around 69 miles south of Lake Superior. The county was formed in 1883, and authorities derived its name from Philetus Sawyer, a United States representative in both the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate.

Initially, Sawyer County was part of Chippewa and Ashland Counties, and the main economic activity was logging. During the late 1850s, loggers came from the neighboring counties, including Cortland, Carroll, and Vermont. This activity continued until the early 1900s, before Sawyer County’s new administration banned it for environmental protection.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Sawyer County has a population of 18,074 people per the 2020 census and has its county seat in Hayward. Further, the census data indicates that the county covers 1,350 square miles, 1,257 of the area being land and the rest being water. This area makes it the fifth largest Wisconsin County by size.

About the County Sheriff’s Office

The Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office is located at 15880 Fifth Street, Hayward, WI 54843, and is currently under Sheriff Doug Mrotek’s leadership. The primary purpose of this Office is to safeguard the environment in an attempt to improve the resident’s general life quality. To achieve this goal, the Sheriff oversees innovative leadership programs and works with other law enforcement agencies.

Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office has several Divisions and Units that assist in its operations. For instance, the Patrol Division comprises uniformed officers on duty at night and during the day for community protection. The K-9 unit, a part of the Patrol Division, assists Narcotic Detectives in arresting individuals possessing and selling illegal drugs. Other members of the Patrol Division include Sergeants and a Lieutenant.

The Patrol Division’s Drive Team

The Sawyer County Dive Team consists of 12 people with the role of reacting to drowning events in the county’s open and ice-covered lakes. Additionally, government agencies contract these Officers for underwater dives to retrieve items that can help in criminal investigations.

The Jail Division

The Sawyer County Jail is under the management of the Sheriff’s Office with the help of the Jail Deputy Security Staff. The initial construction of the Jail’s Huber Wing was in 1973, with a capacity of 34 inmates. In 2007, authorities deemed it right to open a Secure Section with a 52 inmate capacity. There were subsequent renovations of the facility until it achieved its current offender capacity of 104.

Individuals can access information relating to the county jail via the Sheriff’s Office, including inquiries regarding county inmate searches. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office accepts deposits for inmate cash, provided you have the necessary details, including the inmate’s name and booking number.

Records Information

The Wisconsin Freedom of Information Act classifies inmate records under public records, allowing the public to access them. In compliance, the County Sheriff’s Office provides various access means, including online websites for timely searches. For instance, there is an online jail roster containing information on current inmates in the County Jail. Additionally, information regarding foreclosure sales and accident reports is available.

For legally protected documents, you must contact the Sheriff’s Office in person or via mail for guidance on getting a court order or subpoena. Additionally, you may incur a small processing and printing fee for the records.

Sawyer County Inmate Search

The Sawyer County Jail is the main adult correctional facility in Sawyer County and is located at 15880 5th St, Hayward, WI 54843. On the other hand, the Sawyer County Juvenile Detention Center houses juvenile offenders.

The adult offender search in the county’s jail system is a less complicated task due to the availability of an online jail roster. A roster is a document containing details on current inmates in the facility, including:

  • Name (First, Middle, and Last)
  • Date of Incarceration
  • Age, Sex, and Race
  • Incarceration Status

However, it takes up to three days to make changes on the roster so ensure you regularly check for the latest updates. Alternatively, you can visit the jail in person and review the roster in the facility’s lobby. Usually, the booklet is up to date as it records every new inmate who accesses the facility and removes the names of releases and transferees.

Sometimes, you may need information on expunged or sealed inmate records. Acquiring such data is complex, as only a court order can authorize access to them. Similarly, juvenile offender information is not accessible to the general public. Only close family members, such as parents and guardians, can gain access. Other times, the attorneys may get a court order authorizing a review of such records. This happens if the juvenile gets involved in other criminal activities.

Inmate Search after Transfer to State Level

Sometimes, the custody status of inmates in the Sawyer County Jail may change due to disciplinary issues. In such a case, the Sheriff has the authority to authorize the transfer of such offenders to state-run facilities. Such a scenario may also arise when an inmate at the County Jail has a pending court case, and the sentence indicates that the inmate should be in a high-security facility.

If the abovementioned scenarios occur, you’ll have to conduct a state inmate search via the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. The following are the search options available via the website:

  • Search by Name
  • Address Search Category
  • Search by Incarceration Number

Ensure you provide the inmate’s first and last name in conjunction when using the Search by Name category for accurate results.
