About the County

Shawano County is located on the northeastern side of Wisconsin and extends 40 miles to Green Bay. The initial inhabitants of the county were French-Canadians and British fur traders, who engaged in trading activities with the neighboring Chippewa people. Afterward, the Germans and Polish people inhabited the area in the mid-nineteenth century to engage in agriculture, primarily crop cultivation as a source of income.

Authorities established the present-day boundaries of the county in 1853 by carving apart portions of Oconto County and Outagamie County. This decision came to pass after a voting process, with Elias Murray, Charles D. Wescott, and Elisha Alexander assuming the supervisor role. Two hundred fifty-four residents were officially enrolled at that time, but only the males could vote.

Currently, Shawano County has a population of 40,881, according to the United States Census Bureau, and the county seat is in Shawano. Additionally, the county covers 909 square miles, 898 of it being the land area and the rest being water.

About the County Sheriff’s Office

The Shawano Sheriff’s Office sits at 405 N. Main St, Shawano, WI 54166. It’s the County’s primary law enforcement authority responsible for keeping the residents and their properties safe and secure by preventing crimes timely and professionally. The current Sheriff is Adam Bieber, who oversees the Department’s operations with the help of Patrol Officers, Lieutenants, and Sergeants.

The Patrol Division

The Patrol Division is a diverse section of the Sheriff’s Office and comprises Patrol Lieutenants (4), Field Services Captain, and Patrol Deputies (26). This Division’s primary responsibility is to enforce traffic and criminal violation laws and to respond to distress calls. Other responsibilities include:

  • Inmate Transportation. Inmate transportation is a broad area and can involve the transportation of inmates from the county jails to court hearings. Additionally, the Patrol Division transports prisoners who attend facility-approved family emergencies, like the burial of a close family member.
  • Investigations. However, this role is restricted to inquiries relating to vehicle crashes.

The Patrol Division achieves the above responsibilities with the assistance of the Investigations Division, especially if a particular case is complex.

Fingerprinting Services

Fingerprinting services are necessary for people seeking various licenses, passports, or jobs. The Shawano County Sheriff’s office charges a $25 fee for two fingerprint cards, and you must present acceptable identification documents, such as a military or state-issued ID.

Individuals interested in these services must visit 210 W. 2nd Street, in person, from Monday through Friday, between 8 am and 4 pm. However, call the office at 715-526-7911 before the planned visit to confirm the availability of the services.

The Investigative Division

The purpose of the Investigative Division is to screen criminal cases. Each Investigator handles a particular case, and you can reach out to the one assigned to your case at 715-526-7905. This contact number is only for use if you’re aware of the Investigator handling your case. If not, call 715-526-3111 for general inquiries.

DNA Services

The Sheriff’s Office conducts court-ordered DNA tests at 210 W. 2nd Street from Monday through Friday between 8 am and 4 pm. The requirements for this process include the presentation of a court order and a valid state-issued ID.

County Inmate Search

The main correctional facility in Shawano County is the Shawano County Jail, which is under the management of the Sheriff’s Office. It is a 150-bed facility that houses inmates serving medium-term sentences of one year or less. Additionally, individuals awaiting trial or sentencing are also available in this correctional facility, in addition to those from the Wisconsin Department of Corrections pending community reentry. Usually, such individuals have remaining sentences of six months or less.

What is the Inmate Search Process?

The Freedom of Information Act classifies inmate records under public records, requiring various departments and agencies to make the information accessible to the public. The Shawano County Jail doesn’t maintain an online inmate search website, but it makes available a jail roster at the Sheriff’s Department. Interested individuals can access this information by visiting the Office from Monday through Friday, between 8 am and 4 pm.

The jail roster contains offender information, including:

  • Name
  • Date of Incarceration
  • Age and Race
  • Potential Release Date

The jail roster is more reliable than any other form of county inmate search as it contains up-to-date information. For instance, new inmates must have their details included in the roster before accessing the facility. Similarly, inmates leaving the jail will have their names removed from the roster. You can also call the Sheriff’s Office at (715) 526-9135 for inmate information inquiries.

However, the abovementioned process only applies to adult correctional facilities in the county. Youth Service Centers withhold juvenile information and can only disseminate it to close family members or individuals with court orders.

County Inmate Search for Transferred Inmates

Correctional facility transfer is a common activity in the American Criminal Justice System. Usually, the Sheriff’s Office may request for an inmate’s transfer from county jails to state-run facilities after a change in the individual’s security level. The facility transfer may also happen after the judgment of a pending case involving the inmates where the sentence requires them to serve time in the DOC’s custody.

In any of the above cases, utilize the Wisconsin Department of Correction’s website for the search. It contains information on all currently incarcerated individuals in state-run correctional facilities. The search options include:

  • Search by Name
  • Search by Incarceration Number
  • Address Search

Alternatively, you can utilize the Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry website, which allows you to learn about registered sex offenders within your area of residence.
