About the County

Sheboygan County is located on the eastern side of Wisconsin and derives its name from the Sheboygan River. Initially, Sheboygan County was part of Brown County until 1836, when the legislature passed an Act that detached the two. This period was barely a year after Wisconsin became a territory. Two years later, the legislature approved legislation establishing the county government and laying out the procedures for the first election of officials in 1838.

Over the years, the county maintained its original boundary organization, and it was until 1965 that authorities divided the county into 39 districts. The rising county population was the reason for this action. However, in 1982, the county leaders restored the county district numbers to 34.

Currently, Sheboygan County has a population of 118,034, with its county seat in Sheboygan city. The United States Census Bureau further indicates that the county covers 1,271 square miles.

About the County Sheriff’s Office

The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office is located at 525 North 6th Street, Sheboygan, WI 53081 and was established in 1846. The Department’s primary mission is to promote community protection by reducing crime rates. Additionally, it aims to provide a safe environment where people can conduct their businesses without fear.

The Sheriff’s Office performs its duties of community protection through the following Divisions:

The Patrol Division

The Patrol Division is the Sheriff’s Department’s primary law enforcement section. Patrol Officers perform a variety of tasks, including non-complex crimes investigations, attending to civil complaints, and enforcing traffic regulations.

This division achieves its goals with the help of 47 Patrol Officers, including Lieutenants (3) and Sergeants (6), covering 15 townships and over 1,000 road miles.

Patrol Division’s Liquor License Compliance Program

This program consists of random visits to bars and restaurants throughout Sheboygan County. During these visits, the Patrol Officers may do walk-throughs, engaging with customers to verify their age as they consume their drinks.

Additionally, the officers regularly inspect these establishments to ensure they comply with county health standards. In case of a violation, they educate and help the business owners on how to fix the issue.

The Criminal Investigation Division

This Division’s purpose is to look into complicated or time-consuming cases for patrol deputies to handle. Within this Division is a Property Officer responsible for safely keeping physical and digital media evidence.

Some of the crimes that the Criminal Investigation Division responds to include:

  • Building Fires
  • Death Investigations
  • Cyber and Financial Crimes
  • Sexual Offenses
  • Child Abuse Cases

To ensure the Criminal Investigation Officers are competent, the Division takes them through regular training and retraining programs.

Contact the Criminal Investigations Division at 920-459-3112 to report criminal activities or inquire about ongoing investigations.

The Correctional Division

The largest Division under the Sheriff’s Office is the Correctional Division, with the major facility having been constructed in 1998 as a 295-bed Detention Center. This correctional facility houses male and female offenders, with its East wing serving as a Juvenile Detention Center.

The staff members in the Sheboygan County Detention Center include:

  • Booking Clerks (2)
  • Correctional Officers (54)
  • Supervisors (12)
  • An ATI Coordinator
  • An Electronic Monitoring Officer

County Inmate Search

The Sheboygan County Detention Center holds inmates of varying security levels, from minimum to maximum. As such, the duration of sentences varies and can be more than ten years. Additionally, the inmates available at the correctional facility are not only those from the local areas but also from the neighboring communities and the state-run facilities.

In the past, the inmate search process was complex across the United States due to the lack of conventional search options. Additionally, most institutions classified offender information as private, and only certain people could access it.

However, with the enactment of the Freedom of Information Act in 1966, inmate records fell under the category of public records. As such, agencies and departments had to devise ways to ease public access to these records.

The Inmate Search Process

Sheboygan County allows its residents to utilize VINELink, an online tool containing information on inmates in the County Sheriff’s custody. To conduct an inmate search, visit the VINELink website, which gives you two search options: Search by Name and Search by ID Number.

The Search by Name option requires you to input the inmate’s first and last name in full for accurate results. If the full names are unknown, you may opt for the partial search, where you can use the first few letters of the names or their initials. However, this option has its downside; the search results will be broad.

The ID Number Search category requires you to provide the particular inmate’s ID number, in full or partially. Similarly, providing a partial ID number will produce broad results.

Crime victims can register with the VINELink website for email and text message notifications on the custody statuses of their perpetrators. The service is confidential, and there is no chance that your personal information will be in the public domain.

County Inmate Search Using the Jail Roster

Through the Sheriff’s Office, Sheboygan County maintains an online jail roster containing the names of current inmates in the Sheboygan County Detention Center. The jail officials update this list every morning, ensuring it is reliable for public use. The Sheriff’s Office also provides a jail roster which you can review in person or by calling the Department at (920) 459-3111.
