About the County

St. Croix County is located on the northwestern side of Wisconsin, with its county seat in Hudson. ‘Saint Croix’ is another name for ‘Holy Cross’ and was derived from Father Hennepin, one of the first white visitors to the location. Other early inhabitants of the area were fur traders who came to engage in the trade business as early as 1793. This trading activity with the Indian community lasted for years until 1834, when farmers from the neighboring communities began occupying the area.

In 1840, the Wisconsin Territorial Legislature gave the green light for the splitting of Crawford County, resulting in the formation of St. Croix County. Additionally, the legislation Stillwater and Saint Paul Cities served as the electoral precincts until authorities redrew territorial boundaries years later.

Today, St. Croix County has a population of 93,536, according to the United States Census Bureau. Additionally, the county extends to 736 square miles, 722 of it being the land area and the rest being water.

About the County Sheriff’s Office

The St. Croix Sheriff’s Office is located at 1101 Carmichael Rd, Suite G200, Hudson, WI 54016, and has a primary objective to safeguard the lives of the community members and their property. Additionally, the office attends to the needs and interests of the citizens by offering programs and services through various divisions.

Some of the divisions and services available through this office include:

The Patrol Division

This is the most active and visible Division of the Sheriff’s Department. It performs its community protection duties through uniformed and ununiformed parole officers who are always on duty 24 hours a day throughout the week. The following are the officials who make up the division:

  • Lieutenant (1). He is the overall leader of the division
  • Sergeants (5)
  • Deputies (24)

Other duties of the above individuals besides the day and night patrols include answering and responding to 911 and general public service calls.

The K-9 Unit

The K-9 Unit helps the Patrol Division and the Narcotics Unit detect illegal drugs. Additionally, the canines in the unit come in handy in flushing violent offenders out of their hideouts and protecting their handlers from serious injury during the process.

The United States Police Canine Association annually certifies all of the county’s K-9s to ensure they’re properly taken care of. Additionally, the K-9 unit accepts donations that could help accomplish its duties, and interested individuals can make such donations here.

Special Services Division

The Special Services Division consists of the following units:

The Investigative Unit

This unit comprises eight investigators and a technician. This personnel undergoes regular training and retraining programs to ensure they perform their duties efficiently.

The Court Services Unit

This unit’s purpose is to protect the court and maintain integrity in all proceedings. It comprises six full-time deputies and other part-time ones who also organize inmate transportation from the county jail to the court and back.

Medication Collection Program

The Medication Collection Program’s purpose is to collect unused or unwanted pharmaceuticals from the county residents. Individuals with such drugs can participate in the program by dropping them off anonymously at the Sheriff’s Office for safe disposal.

Acceptable Items

  • Liquid medicines in their containers
  • Inhalers and sprayers
  • Solid drugs, including over-the-counter medications

However, the Sheriff’s Office doesn’t accept radioactive cancer drugs, oxygen tanks, and mercury thermometers.

County Inmate Search

St. Croix County, through the Sheriff’s Department, runs the St. Croix County Jail, located at 1101 Carmichael Rd, Suite G200, Hudson, WI 54016. Inmates include crime convicts serving sentences for misdemeanor offenses and serious felony crimes. Additionally, highly intoxicated persons who pose a threat to themselves or others may also spend time in jail until authorities can move them to a detoxification facility within the county.

St. Croix County Inmate Search Process

St. Croix County makes the inmate search process for inmates in county jails easy. Unlike some counties which lack online search options, the county provides an online jail roster containing information on currently incarcerated individuals. This website has the following search options:

  • Name Search Option
  • Arrest Date Search Category
  • Potential Release Date Option

Use the above option in conjunction for accurate results, although the name search option alone may give similar results.

Alternatively, the Sheriff’s Office has a jail roster accessible by the general public in person or via call at 715-386-4752.

The VINE Service

VINELink is a statewide victim notification program offering offender search services for the general public and crime victims. Visit this link to enroll in the program and choose one of the following search options; Name and ID Number. The Name Search option requires you to provide the first and last name of the offender in conjunction or independently. However, searching separately will give broad and inaccurate results.

When using the ID Number Search option, ensure you know the accurate number, failure to which the results will be inaccurate.

Crime victims can register with the website for texts and email notifications on the custody statuses of their perpetrators. These notifications also include information on the offender’s court cases and any other charges the inmate faces that may affect the scheduled release dates.

County Inmate Search using the DOC’s Website

Typically, the Wisconsin Department of Corrections maintains information about offenders in state-run correctional facilities. It provides the following broad search options:

  • Search by Name
  • Address Search
  • Search by Incarceration Number

To get information on St. Croix County inmates, use the Name Search and the Address Search options together. The Address Search allows you to specify the county of interest; in this case, it’s St. Croix County.
