About the County

Taylor County is located in northwestern Wisconsin. The United States Census Bureau indicates that the county has a population of 19,913, a 1.8% decrease from 2010. The Census Report further shows that the county covers 984 square miles, 975 of it being the land area and the rest being water.

Initially, the area currently known as Taylor County was part of Clark, Marathon, Chippewa, and Lincoln Counties. However, in 1875, legislators enacted an Act that set off sections of the aforementioned counties to form one county. Since then, the county boundaries have remained the same, with the length and width being 42 and 24 miles, respectively.

The County Seat

The legislation overseeing Taylor County’s formation required the county seat to be in Medford Village. Per the Act’s requirements, authorities held the first Circuit Court meeting in a hotel in Medford on November 1875. Since then, all major county meetings and events have taken place in this town.

About the County Sheriff’s Office

The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office is located at 224 South Second Street, Medford, WI 54451. It is the primary law enforcement authority responsible for correcting unlawful acts in the county and protecting the lives and businesses of the residents. The Sheriff is the head of the office and serves for four years, after which an election is held concurrently with the General Presidential Election.

The Sheriff’s Office offers the following services:

Crime Stoppers

This program aims to bring together the county residents, media, and police in fighting crimes. It provides a toll-free number (1-866-892-7463) that the public can use to report potential, ongoing, or already-happened criminal activities. Upon receipt of the call, the officers at the Sheriff’s Office decode the message and record the call time and date, after which they generate a secret code number for future follow-up calls.

Notably, the program assures anonymity for all the callers. Additionally, there are cash prizes for calls and reports resulting in the apprehension of perpetrators.

Foreclosure Sale Notices

The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for notifying the citizens about upcoming foreclosure sales. These are auction sales by banks or courts after a party fails to pay a mortgage or any other form of sale agreement. Usually, the Sheriff’s Office conducts these sales on Wednesdays at 10 am, although this timeline varies. Hence, contact the office at 715-748-2200 for clarification.

During these sales, successful bidders must bring at least 10% of the successful bid amount in cash or cashier checks. If these options are unavailable, the Sheriff will accept a certified check payable to the County Clerk of Courts. Additionally, the successful bidder must cater for any other expenses associated with the purchase, including legal liens and unpaid taxes.

You can confirm the status of a sale at the Clerk of Circuit Court’s Office or this online website. Upon sale confirmation by the court, you’ll have at most ten days to complete the payment.

Records Reports

Taylor County Sheriff’s Office provides an online form that individuals can fill out to request various records, including incident and accident reports. Upon submitting, the Sheriff’s Office will process it for a few days, after which you’ll receive feedback via email.

Alternatively, you can visit the Wisconsin DOT website to access accident reports. When making this application, you must present the assigned case number and wait for ten days for confirmation and feedback.

County Inmate Search

In the past, the inmate search process in Taylor County was complex due to the lack of a conventional method of accessing inmate information. However, the enactment of the Freedom of Information Act in 1966 meant that the Taylor County Jail and other correctional facilities had to provide easy public access to offender information.

Taylor County gives access to VINE, a website that provides offender information for inmates across the United States County Jails. The public can utilize it to learn about an inmate’s custody status, including their potential release dates. Crime victims can also register for email and text notifications on these inmates.

The search options available include:

  • Name
  • ID Number

Taylor County Inmate Search using the Jail Roster

The Sheriff’s Office is the department responsible for the operations of the County’s Correctional Division. Through the office, you’ll find the jail roster for the Taylor County Jail, which is updated regularly to ensure it’s reliable. You can access the roster personally by visiting the office or calling the department at 715-748-2200.

However, juvenile offender information is not accessible to the general public per the county laws. Instead, only close family members, like parents and guardians, can gain access. Other times, a court may give an order or a subpoena requesting certain parties, like police officers, to access the information.

Inmate Search after Transfer to the DOC’s Custody

There are cases where an inmate gets transferred from the Taylor County Jail System to a state-run facility. This scenario is common after an offender’s security level changes or when a court of law deems it so.

In such a case, the best way to learn about the inmate’s whereabouts is through the Wisconsin Department of Correction’s Offender Search website. It is a database that contains information on inmates in Wisconsin state-run prisons and gives you the following search options:

  • Search by Name
  • Address Search
  • Search by Incarceration Number

A successful Search by Name option requires you to provide the inmate’s first and last names in conjunction.
