About the County

Trempealeau County is located on the west central side of Wisconsin, near Illinois, Minnesota, and Iowa. The initial inhabitants of the area were fur traders who camped at the Trempealeau Mountain in 1820. As a result, Trempealeau Bay became popular for trappers, traders, and river voyagers. By 1824, the Trempealeau Mountain attracted other settlers, including Dakota’s Wabashas band and the Hochunks.

In 1854, George Gale and other legislators played a vital role in the formation of Trempealeau County from Buffalo and Jackson Counties. During this time, authorities chose Whitehall City as the county seat, and this has remained the case up to date.

The 2020 census results indicate that Trempealeau County has a population of 30,760, a 4.4% growth from 2010. The United States Census Bureau shows further that the county covers 742 square miles, 733 of the area being land and the rest being water.

About the County Sheriff’s Office

The Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Office is located at 36245 Main St, Whitehall, WI 54773. It began operations in 1854 after the county’s formation and works to protect the lives and properties of over 30,000 county residents. The Sheriff is the overall department’s head and works with the help of other office employees, including Patrol Officers, to achieve the goal of community protection.

The Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team

The Emergency Response Team is under the Special Units and consists of specially trained officers who are also part of the Patrol Division. The unique training of officers helps them perform complex duties for regular officers. Additionally, they have access to equipment, like firearms and gears, to help them deal with hazardous situations.

Some of this team’s responsibilities include:

  • Participating in Hostage Rescue Missions
  • Riot Control
  • Counter Terrorism Activities
  • Offering Perimeter Security
  • Rescue Missions for Officers Captured
  • Rescuing High-Risk Suicidal Persons

Additionally, the Trempealeau County Emergency Response Team gets contracted by neighboring counties to help in the abovementioned operations.

The K-9 Unit

The K-9 Unit employs the use of canines to perform some high-risk operations, such as flushing violent offenders out of their hideouts. In addition, the K-9s help their handlers fight against narcotics in the community.

The Drug Abuse Resistance Education

The purpose of the D.A.R.E Program is to assist children and youths in resisting peer pressure involving drug use and substance abuse. The program has existed since 1992 and helps children understand that they can be famous and self-confident in positive behavior. Additionally, it has incorporated lessons on cybercrimes and internet security to keep the children at par with technological advancements.

Who is Involved in the D.A.R.E Program?

The D.A.R.E Program involves the cooperation of parents, teachers, and police officers. Parents are the most significant people in the program as they are the children’s role models. As such, they have the role of reinforcing and portraying desirable behavior in their interaction with the children. On the other hand, officers and teachers are only responsible for teaching sound decision-making skills and correcting bad behavior.

County Inmate Search

Trempealeau County Jail is the central county’s adult correctional facility under the management of the Sheriff’s Office. The facility houses male and female individuals arrested for various offenses as they await trial or sentencing. You’ll also find highly-intoxicated individuals in this jail before they are transferred to a detoxification center.

The county maintains an inmate locator website that allows the public to access offender information through the Sheriff’s Office. However, the jail roster is not always accurate, and the office doesn’t take responsibility for any damages incurred after relying on the data.

How Does the Trempealeau County Inmate Search Work?

Through the abovementioned website, you’ll have the option to choose your preferred language. The search tools available include:

  • Search by Last Name
  • Search by First Name
  • D.O.B. Search

You may opt to use the name searches separately or in conjunction, but using them together produces more accurate results.

The Search Results

After a successful search, the following offender information will be available:

  • Name
  • D.O.B.
  • Sex
  • Bail/Fine Information
  • Custody Status
  • Charges

Notably, some of the individuals in the jail haven’t gone to trial yet, making them innocent until proven guilty. Hence, no employer should deny them employment opportunities based on their current statuses.

The Sheriff’s Office also maintains an up-to-date jail roster which you can access by visiting the office or at (715) 538-2311 Ext. 452.

County Inmate Search for Transferees

Sometimes, inmates awaiting trial in the Trempealeau County Jail may have committed crimes in the state’s jurisdiction. Upon sentencing, the inmates will be transferred to a state-run correctional facility under the Wisconsin Department of Corrections.

In such a case, you can conduct an inmate search by visiting the DOC’s website and choosing one of the following search options:

  • Search by Name
  • Address Search
  • Search by Incarceration

If you aren’t aware of your loved one’s incarceration number, the name search option is better. However, ensure you use the last and first names in conjunction for accurate results.

The search results provide the following details about an inmate:

  • Name
  • Date of Incarceration
  • Incarceration Facility
  • Custody Status
  • Eligibility for Parole

The Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry also contains information on registered sex offenders in Trempealeau County. All you have to do is narrow your search to a radius of your choice, and information on registrants in that area will appear.
