Winnebago County is located in the central-eastern region of Wisconsin, in the United States. European Americans founded Winnebago County in 1840, formally established in 1848. The term Winnebago is of Algonquin origin with variants used by the Fox and Potowatomi. It refers to “people living by the foul-smelling or fetid water,” which might potentially be a sulfur spring.

The county belongs Appleton-Oshkosh-Neenah, WI Combined Statistical Area, and utilizes Oshkosh as the county seat, founded as a city in 1853. The county seat’s name comes from Chief Oshkosh, a chief from the federally recognized Native American group, the Ho-Chunk Nation. It belongs to the Oshkosh-Neenah, WI, Metropolitan Statistical Area.

According to the 2020 census, 171,730 people live in this county, which covers 579 square miles. Politically in recent years, Winnebago County has become a swing county.

Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) is located at 650 W State St, Rockford, IL 61102, United States. The office’s primary mission is to provide comprehensive public safety services in collaboration with its residents to foster a safe and secure community. John Matz is the Winnebago County Sheriff.

To attain this mission, the office has various divisions that help it to distribute its primary purpose to the county and its residents.

Patrol Division

This division carries out criminal and accident investigations and county and state law enforcement. It frequently takes part in a variety of State-level events. It uses many Wisconsin Department of Transportation and Bureau of Traffic Safety Grants to enhance highway safety and accident reduction.

Corrections Division

This division is responsible for convicts’ and visitors’ security, safety, and health while in jail. It manages a direct supervision facility in addition to carrying out the sheriff’s statutory responsibilities for court maintenance, such as courthouse security, inmate transport, and interstate extraditions.

Detective Bureau

This unit is responsible for conducting thorough investigations to identify criminal activity and bring offenders to justice. It is in charge of looking into all violent offenses, felonies, and misdemeanors. It also presents cases for criminal prosecution, collaborates with other authorities on investigations, and forges relationships in the neighborhood to increase the resources available for investigations.

Communications Unit

WCSO runs the Winnebago 911 Communications Center. It is the first point of contact for individuals needing help and is officially known as a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP). Dispatchers enter call information using Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) technology. They take notes in the CAD system while they listen to callers and probe them. Information such as the caller’s identity, the event’s location, what is happening explicitly, and other pertinent details depending on the occurrence.

Special Units

SWAT Team responds to high-risk occurrences in the county; this includes police raids, negotiations, and hunting down armed criminals. Members of the team must meet strict criteria for training, physical fitness, and operational skills to hold this classification.

Winnebago County Inmate Search

The county has a county jail that the WCSO runs and maintains. The 355-bed prison was constructed in 1983 and currently acts as the harboring point for county inmates, all charged with violating state, federal, and county laws.

After being arrested by various local law enforcement agencies, such as the local police departments, sheriff’s offices, US marshals, and state police departments, these inmates are booked at their stations. Those who can manage to pay bail are released with the promise to appear in court on the set date. However, those who cannot pay bail or are denied by the court are transferred to the county jail, where they can stay until the court date.

Again, it also houses all the inmates the Wisconsin DOC releases on a re-entry program in the county and the probation and parole violators. The WCSO is responsible for booking these inmates and updating the jail roster. Additionally, they must make the jail roster accessible to the general public per the WI-FOIA.

How To Locate An Inmate Using The Winnebago County Jail Roster

Finding one using the Winnebago County Jail roster is effortless. This is because WCSO groups the jail in names, with all inmates with the same first letter of their name grouped. Thus, performing a Winnebago County inmate search is easy when you know the inmate’s name.

You can tap on the inmate’s name, redirecting you to their mugshot and personal information.

Alternatives Ways For Winnebago Inmate Search

In some cases, the inmate’s name might not appear on the roster, mainly when the inmate produces false information to the booking officers. Nonetheless, you can find them by phone by contacting the jail at 920-236-7300 and giving any aliases or physical descriptive features like hair color or tattoos.

Again, you can visit the jail and seek to find the inmate in person. Moreover, you can use the Wisconsin DOC offender database.

Winnebago Sex Offender Search

To locate a sex offender, you can visit the Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry to search offender by name or geographical location; or contact the WCSO at (920) 727-2888.
